Pete McIntyre Skipper Pete’s sailing career started (and nearly finished) in an Optimist Dinghy, when sailing back against wind and current proved too much………. Sailing lessons were required!
Some years later he decided to build his own yacht and work commenced on a Spray 28. After 5 long hard years she was launched. During this time he started crewing on a Sigma 33, ‘Djinn Seng S’ skippered by Neville Hodkin, to whom he is forever grateful for the experience and knowledge he gained in those early years. He went on to sail with Neville on ‘Djinn Seng X’, one of the first X332s, and later ‘Extra Djinn’ an X362, travelling 600 miles every weekend to sail in the Hamble River and Warsash Spring and Winter series for 4 years, along with other major regattas and several of Scarborough's own North Sea Race's. When the lure of foreign travel became too much he set off with a couple of friends on an extended cruise to the Baltic, through the Kiel Canal to Denmark and Sweden, a trip which was repeated 4 years later, this time also taking in Poland and the North German Coast. During all this sailing Pete attended the RYA Day Skipper, Yachtmaster and Yachtmaster Ocean Courses and went on to become an Instructor at Scarborough YC, where he is now Principal. Emma Nutt Co Skipper Emma’s sailing career started on family sailing holidays and really took off, whilst attending the Day Skipper course, when she was invited to crew by Pete on Scallywag. Emma was badly bitten by the bug and has not stopped sailing since, she is full of enthusiasm for any job to do with the boat, from cleaning the bilges (her speciality!) to helping take the engine to bits and anything and everything in between, she has also been seen in the harbour mud at 6 in the morning filling sandbags to help the beloved Ruffian sit nicely when the tide is out! (That absolutely ruins ones nails!!) With the exception of one ‘round the island’ race with Nigel Musto!, Emma’s bay racing experience has been confined to Scarborough, crewing on Scallywag, Tristar and Kassie. But having taken part in the North Sea Race, and several delivery trips, to France and other destinations, along with the three major races,Emma is the other half of Ruffians two handed crew. Fred Ingham Crew Boss, Main Sail trim. Having moved to Bridlington at the age of 11, and never having seen the sea before I became immediately enthralled with it. I immediately joined the Bridlington Sea scout group which had affiliation to the RYYC so started my sailing career. As a Sea Scout I would sit on the jetty by the yacht ferry boat (hoping more often than not) that the ferryman could find me a crewing place on a shorthanded boat. At the age of 16 I had the opportunity to sail on the Topsail Schooner the ‘Malcolm Miller’ to broaden my sea knowledge then spending a summer crewing on a 30 tone Yawl called ‘Arminell’ in France I eventually moved to Essex to pursue a career with Musto &Hyde Sails during which time I sailed and raced on Quarter toners, National Squibs, Int Dragons, 505’s, then a 470 Olympic campaign representing GB in Kiel. Latterly I sailed on a J24, Qualifying and completing in the Europeans and World Championships. During this time I qualified as a RYA Advanced Sailing and Powerboat Instructor. I recently completed a seven month 36000nm delivery trip on a 600 tone Schooner from Grande Canaria to Barbados then through the Panamá Canal across the Pacific, visiting 15 islands on the way culminating in New Zealand. I returned Bridlington and crewed on Starchick, but looking for extra sailing, during the winter, when The Royal Yorkshire Yacht Club had finished their years racing programme, Fred joined the crew two years ago and has been instrumental in the crew training, passing on the vast amount of knowledge he gained as a sail maker. Mike Adams Trimmer Started sailing really in 2005 after having been on a little jaunt around Cowes as a jolly for a works "away day". The bug bit hard and I immediately started looking for other opportunities to sail.and made enquiries with the RYA and did some dinghy sailing to progress through the syllabus. Sailed dinghies at Abersoch and in the Lakes but it wasnt until I made some enquiries at local yacht clubs, and started crewing on a regular basis in bay races out of Whitby that it really became a serious focus for me.
I crewed on a regular basis on an Elan 31, engaged mainly on foredeck duties. In terms of racing, this was mainly at Whitby, but also took part in the Bell Lawrie Scottish Series Regatta in 2006, an excellent week of full-on racing with some big fields and interesting moments at the start line. I spent around 2 seasons at Whitby and then life threw in a few challenges which kept me otherwise occupied for a while until following a chance meeting with the skipper of a boat I used to race against flicked the switch again and I just couldnt be away from it any longer and decided that I should look for another opportunity to get back to sailing again.
I had also been progressing both shorebased and practical qualifications along the way and completed competent crew sailing around the Solent, Hamble, Southampton and Potsmouth, Day skipper on the West Coast of Scotland, and also some cruising trips in the same area following an invitation from the day skipper instructor. Deciding that I wanted to go to the next step in terms of Qualifications, I made enquiries with SYC and have sailed on Ruffian since mid summer 2008.
Helen started sailing early September with Tomahawk and joined Ruffian around mid September for the coastal races. Apart from a little dinghy sailing, Helen had not sailed before and is now a regular team member with a 100% attendance record. Being a young 'en she came 2nd in cadet helm and lady helm this year. Helen Rhodes Helen started sailing in dinghies a couple of years ago and to gain experience in big boat racing, joined Ruffian’s crew at the beginning of the Autumn series in 2008, where she has been a regular member ever since. Always full of enthusiasm and keenness to learn, Helens growing knowledge and attentiveness has made her a valuable member of the crew, helping out on fore deck and anywhere else when required.
